1. Introduction: Methods and Approaches of Teaching English

Due to the changing form and status of English, many methods and approaches have been adopted to teach this language. The shortcomings of one method or one approach gave birth to another method or approach. In order to achieve the objectives of English teaching, the teacher must adopt the adequate method or approach. For this a sound knowledge of various methods and approaches, their merits and demerits is essential.

हिंदी अनुवाद अंग्रेजी के बदलते स्वरूप और स्थिति के कारण, इस भाषा को सिखाने के लिए कई विधियों और दृष्टिकोणों को अपनाया गया है। एक विधि या दृष्टिकोण की कमियों ने दूसरी विधि या दृष्टिकोण को जन्म दिया। अंग्रेजी शिक्षण के उद्देश्यों को प्राप्त करने के लिए, शिक्षक को पर्याप्त विधि या दृष्टिकोण अपनाना चाहिए। इसके लिए विभिन्न विधियों और दृष्टिकोणों, उनके गुणों और अवगुणों का अच्छा ज्ञान आवश्यक है।

Difference between Method and Approach

Sometimes people use the terms method and approach interchangeably. But there is a difference between the two. Approach is a broader term than method.

हिंदी अनुवाद कभी-कभी लोग विधि (Method) और दृष्टिकोण (Approach) शब्दों का परस्पर उपयोग करते हैं। लेकिन दोनों में अंतर है। दृष्टिकोण, विधि की तुलना में एक व्यापक शब्द है।

Approach is axiomatic (study of self evident truths). In the words of Anthony¹, “It states a point of view or philosophy or an assumption which one believes but cannot necessarily prove.”

हिंदी अनुवाद दृष्टिकोण স্বতঃसिद्ध होता है (स्व-प्रमाणित सत्यों का अध्ययन)। एंथोनी¹ के शब्दों में, “यह एक दृष्टिकोण या दर्शन या एक धारणा को बताता है जिसे कोई मानता है लेकिन आवश्यक रूप से साबित नहीं कर सकता है।”

Method is : (a) an overall plan, (b) based on some approach.

हिंदी अनुवाद विधि है: (क) एक समग्र योजना, (ख) किसी दृष्टिकोण पर आधारित।

In the words of Anthony², “Method is an overall plan for the orderly presentation of language material, no part of which contradicts and all of which is based upon the selected approach.”

हिंदी अनुवाद एंथोनी² के शब्दों में, “विधि भाषाई सामग्री की व्यवस्थित प्रस्तुति के लिए एक समग्र योजना है, जिसका कोई भी हिस्सा विरोधाभासी नहीं है और जो सब कुछ चयनित दृष्टिकोण पर आधारित है।”

Thus, approach deals with assumptions and method is a procedure based on some assumption. In this way, within one approach, there can be many methods.

हिंदी अनुवाद इस प्रकार, दृष्टिकोण मान्यताओं से संबंधित है और विधि किसी धारणा पर आधारित एक प्रक्रिया है। इस तरह, एक दृष्टिकोण के भीतर कई विधियाँ हो सकती हैं।

Some Indices of a Good Method and Approach

The following are the Indices of evaluating the usefulness of a method and an approach—

  1. There are many objectives of teaching English. All the objectives cannot be gained through one method or approach. The best method or approach is the one through which maximum objectives can be gained.

  1. अंग्रेजी शिक्षण के कई उद्देश्य हैं। सभी उद्देश्य एक विधि या दृष्टिकोण के माध्यम से प्राप्त नहीं किए जा सकते। सबसे अच्छी विधि या दृष्टिकोण वह है जिसके माध्यम से अधिकतम उद्देश्य प्राप्त किए जा सकते हैं।
  1. The teaching method or approach should be flexible age-wise, i. e., the method should be such that it can be moulded for teaching children of different age groups.

हिंदी अनुवाद 2. शिक्षण विधि या दृष्टिकोण आयु-वार लचीला होना चाहिए, यानी, विधि ऐसी होनी चाहिए कि इसे विभिन्न आयु समूहों के बच्चों को पढ़ाने के लिए ढाला जा सके।

  1. They should be capable of teaching English as language as well as literature.

हिंदी अनुवाद 3. उन्हें अंग्रेजी को भाषा के साथ-साथ साहित्य के रूप में भी पढ़ाने में सक्षम होना चाहिए।

  1. The method or approach should follow the maxims of teaching.

हिंदी अनुवाद 4. विधि या दृष्टिकोण को शिक्षण के सूत्रों (maxims) का पालन करना चाहिए।

  1. The method or approach should be such that the whole course can be completed within time.

हिंदी अनुवाद 5. विधि या दृष्टिकोण ऐसा होना चाहिए कि पूरा पाठ्यक्रम समय के भीतर पूरा किया जा सके।

  1. They should be suitable to both small and large sized classes.

हिंदी अनुवाद 6. उन्हें छोटी और बड़ी दोनों आकार की कक्षाओं के लिए उपयुक्त होना चाहिए।
